What happens when you LOSE your VOICE?
Saturday night I began losing my voice. BRUTAL. It’s like a pitcher losing his arm. I fought through the next three messages and then lost it completely.
- Losing your voice is painful. It hurts!
- Losing your voice is frustrating. You can’t communicate.
- Losing your voice is unfair. You begin to lean on others to communicate for you.
Honestly, losing your voice is frightening. It’s the major venue for my passion. While I hated losing my voice physically, I’m more frightened of losing my voice spiritually.
Every ministry has a voice. Every church has a tone.
Have you ever noticed how voices are like fingerprints? It seems that no two are identical. I am convinced that God raises up different voices for different ministries. A voice is like a spiritual vision. When reading the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) you learn that these four men are describing the same thing from four different vantage points. They have different voices!
You must protect the voice of your ministry. Otherwise, there WILL be pain. There will be a loss of influence. There will be a loss of opportunity and you will find yourself leaning on others to do God’s talking.
How might you lose your voice?
6 Signs you have STOPPED LEARNING
Are you a LIFE-LONG LEARNER? This is a HUGE question and can be the true difference between success in failure. MEDIOCRITY is the best life for those who STOP LEARNING.
KNOW-IT-ALLs tend to live in black & white. At some point, you become comfortable with your worldview and don’t have time for nuance.
- You constantly defend your position
- You don’t listen, you are eager to talk
- You poke holes in foreign ideas
- You begin character assassination when you can’t answer another view
- You stop reading anyone but those who agree with you
- You stop asking questions
Have you ever heard the phrase, “Eat the fish, leave the bones?”
It means that you can learn from ANYBODY! Take the meat, leave behind those things that don’t apply or are disagreeable.
Being a LIFE-LONG LEARNER is crucial in ALL areas of your life:
- Are you still learning as a spouse?
- Are you still learning as a lover?
- Are you still learning how to be a friend?
- Are you still learning on the job?
KICK-START your LEARNING MUSCLES today… Ask a question. Buy a book. Open your ears and shut your mouth!
The FOG of War!
Often, after major victories, we can feel the FUNK of the after-effect. In my pastor circles, we call Monday the ‘holy hangover day.’
When you are exiting the FOG OF WAR, it is important to remember that you are likely at your weakest emotionally, physically, & spiritually. Temptation will strike you at your most vulnerable point… so be prepared!
There are MANY biblical examples for this. Here are two that I always remember:
- Elijah – read 1 Kings 18 & 19. After his greatest victory, he tasted his lowest moment.
- Samson – read Judges 15. After victory over 1,000 men, he was despondent and doubting.
I’m convinced that this tendency is part of the curse of work (Genesis 3:17ff). Even when it is the most fulfilling, we must be aware of the aftershocks.
We often work SO HARD for our success… How can we manage the FOG OF WAR that follows?
Play the game with the 4TH QUARTER in mind!

If I had to choose between a 1st quarter team or a 4th quarter team – I choose the 4th quarter team every time! So would you. Teams that start fast and electrify the crowd in the 1st half of the game fun. They are also heartbreaking when they run out of steam and lose it in the final minutes.
I would rather finish strong and WIN.
So often, we don’t live with the end in mind. We live as if this life is all we have. We make relational decisions and spend our money like there really is ‘no tomorrow.’
God challenges us to take a 4th quarter approach to life. If you are a Christ Follower, you can take risks in the 1st half of the game. You can play loose because you know God has already WON the game.
I challenge you to give up something for the benefit of someone else. I urge you to sit at the back of the room rather than scrambling to be first. Suffer well knowing that your migraines will end in God’s new heaven & new earth. Hang in there knowing that you will lack no good thing in God’s new creation.
Play with the WIN… be a 4th quarter person!
